Hissene Habre

Ruling Chad with an iron fist between 1982 and 1990, Habre was toppled by current President Idriss Deby Itno.

Since his overthrow, he has lived in exile in Senegal.

After 19 months of investigation, Senegalese authorities in collaboration with the African Union indicted Habre in July 2013 for war crimes and crimes against humanity, and placed him under provisional detention.

OBSERVATION

Legal and impartial adjudication of crimes, especially war crimes and crimes against humanity, is integral to establishing lasting peace because it makes it clear and unequivocal that war crimes and crimes against humanity will be legally adjudicated, which will deter some people from committing such crimes and reduce the overall propensity to commit crimes, especially during conflict.

Those who have been indicted and or convicted in the past are no worse than those committing the same and or worse crimes in the present.

For any society to enjoy peace, crimes and criminals need to be legally and accurately prosecuted in a timely manner. Refusing that is encouraging crime and an effort to prevent lasting peace. That shall not prevail through any means, manner or form.
